Since 1919, Coney Island Diner has been more than just a place to grab a meal. It’s been part of the heartbeat of downtown Mansfield. Founded by Greek immigrant John George, who introduced Mansfield to its very first “Coney Dog,” the diner quickly became a local institution built on simple food, familiar faces, and recipes people still talk about generations later.

In 1936, the diner moved into its current Main Street location, where it remains today, glowing with the same vintage character that has welcomed customers for nearly a century. The original booths and counter still stand, worn smooth by decades of conversations, coffee cups, laughter, and late-night meals. Step inside and you’ll find walls layered with local yearbooks, sports memorabilia, and historic photographs that make the diner feel less like a restaurant and more like a living scrapbook of Mansfield itself.

Over the years, ownership changed hands while the spirit of the diner stayed remarkably intact. In 1965, John George passed the business to his nephew Angelo George and Angelo’s brother, Petros Stavridis. In 1992, Jim and Cathy Smith carried the tradition forward for the next three decades, introducing their now-famous pea salad recipe from the former Yellow Deli while preserving the classic mom-and-pop atmosphere locals cherished. In 2022, the torch passed again to Greg and Aubrey Caugherty of nearby Lucas, Ohio, who continue honoring the diner’s rich history while serving a new generation of customers.

Today, the menu remains rooted in timeless American comfort food: legendary coney dogs topped with the diner’s original secret-recipe sauce, crispy French fries, hand-spun milkshakes, hearty breakfasts, and homemade favorites that feel wonderfully untouched by passing trends.
